Exclusive content only available online, from a company that’s been on the radio everyday since 1994. Our two-minute radio program has been successful. Since we have so much great content from the people involved in the livestock industry, we produced longer versions of the program to help us get to know those involved a little better. Listen in if you want to hear directly from the people who put steaks and hamburgers on your table!

Welcome to the Cattleman's Corner, sponsored by The American Gelbvieh Association.
Here's our host David Woodruff...
---------
We're talking to Keith Flake. Flake ranch is out south of Apache Junction.
We're here just east of Apache Junction or Mesa, Gold Canyon area
between Apache Junction, Queen Creek, Orange Junction. About 50 sections of state lease.
We don't own an acre and part of it's being developed. Part of it is overrun with recreationists.
The desert floor is brilliant green.
You got, how much rain did you get to get that grass cover?
There, as I recall, about three one inch rains and the spacing was pretty good.
We figured the desert is going to make like a crop. It's going to put on seed, but it comes fast. And then when it turns 100 degrees, it goes fast.
The mesquite beans, there may be some. Or when you get a year without any rain,
the trees don't put any beans?
Oh, it varies from year to year. The most, probably see the first bean in the middle of April. And then it'll be another two or three weeks before there's much of a crop. We used to keep her decals here year round and they were really bean harvesters. The beans are important. They're just not as important as they used to be when we were here year round.

Listen in to this special archived 2021 interview by Howard Hale with cattleman Mike Callicrate.
Who is Mike Callicrate? Listen in to find out!
Mike Callicrate, the founder of Ranch Foods Direct, is a rancher, business entrepreneur and family farm advocate. Considered the “go-to expert” on the negative consequences of industrial meat production, he served as an advisor for the films Food Inc. and FRESH and for several best-selling books including Fast Food Nation and The Omnivore’s Dilemma.
A native of Evergreen, Colorado, he earned a bachelor’s degree in animal science from Colorado State University in 1975 and then moved to St. Francis, Kansas, where he began his career in farming and ranching.
In 2000, he formed Ranch Foods Direct to sell high quality naturally raised beef directly to customers. Since then, it has grown into a prominent, well-respected marketing outlet in the community for small farmers and artisanal food producers from throughout the region. Today Mike’s farm follows a multi-species regenerative agricultural model, using the natural synergies between cattle, hogs and chickens to optimize the health of the livestock and the land.
Ranch Foods Direct is a meat packing facility and local farmer’s retail market delivering healthful, high quality, naturally tender meats and foods to consumers direct from the ranch.
Our goal is to foster a business that benefits both ranchers and consumers. Our processing and distribution systems assures incomparable quality, wholesomeness, eating satisfaction, and a mutually rewarding relationship of trust and responsibility between the rancher and you the customer.
